Bookstart is an Austrian family literacy project which takes places in Burgenland, one of the nine federal states in Austria. It was originally created by the State Association of Burgenland Libraries in order to establish a wide and active library network, which will provide families with activities in the field of family literacy and reading comprehension.
Librarians are the main actor of this project; they organize, promote and implement the activities together with other professionals, such as psychologists, writers, painters, publishers and booksellers. All partners contribute to the development of the necessary materials. Books, brochures, flyers, bags and posters are produced and aim to reach and invite as many families as possible. Once the target group is invited, the professionals organise numerous creative activities which foster family literacy and motivate the participants.
The evaluation of the project has shown its fruitful outcome. In one year, many new libraries were founded, almost half of the families with newborns participated and libraries have created a strong relationship with kindergartners. The project is still ongoing.
The federal government provided the needed funding for this project.
